Often, the difference between successful job seekers and unsuccessful ones is how they deal with recruiters. By following the advice below when working with recruiters: Do’s and Don’ts, you can significantly improve your chances of getting the best out of recruitment agencies and getting the job you want.

First let’s start with what you SHOULD NOT do:

DO NOT just send your resume to a recruitment agency and then sit back and expect things to happen. Chances are you’ll be waiting for a long time.

DO NOT have only one resume that you send out. It’s important that you tweak your resume according the job you’re applying for.

DO NOT waste your time by contacting the wrong agencies. Focus on the agencies that specialise in your line of work.

DO NOT waste the time of recruiters – they’re very busy people. If you ring them (and you should) be sure you keep your calls short and relevant.

Here’s what you SHOULD DO:

DO make it as easy as possible for the recruiter to deal with you. You can do this by:

  1. Submitting an outstanding resume. Why would a recruiter bother to contact you if your resume is second rate? See our How to Write a Great Resume Page!
  2. Ensure your resume has been changed to address the important requirements of the specific job you’re applying for. This means you need to be constantly working on your resume for every new job.
  3. Be honest. Recruiters will stop dealing with you if you make exaggerated claims.
  4. Get back to recruiters QUICKLY. If you delay, they will go to the next person.

DO your best to establish one or two contacts within an agency once you ascertain the best agencies that you should be dealing with. If it’s a small agency one contact will suffice.

DO keep in touch with that contact. Keeping in touch does not mean ringing them every day and annoying them. One short phone call a fortnight should suffice!

The idea is to for the recruiter to get to know you and like you. If you’re front of mind for a recruiter there’s a good chance you’ll be put forward to an employer.
