How to land a job in Logistics

LOGISTICSThe logistics industry is growing but finding a job in this area still takes preparation – here are some tips:

Career

Work out where you ultimately want to be – do you want to run a company or specialise in a particular field? Write a career plan detailing what you want to achieve.

Network, get feedback, and find a mentor

Talk about your career goals with someone who currently works in the job you’d like.  If you currently work at a logistics company, have a discussion with your employer or HR Manager about what you need to do to get promoted. Ask your mentor to introduce you to others in the field.  Speak to Recruitment Consultants.

Qualifications

Entry-level jobs include dispatcher, scheduler and merchandise buyer assistant. Some entry-level jobs, such as operations research analyst or process associate, may need a Bachelor’s degree or other certifications.  Save yourself time and rejection by keeping your search relevant. If you’ve been working in the logistics field for a year or more, assess your experience based on your knowledge of the industry.

Learn

Read newsletters and trade publications so you amass a good working knowledge of current ideas and technologies, then research qualifications. Logistics degrees cover subjects such as management, managerial decision-making, distribution and logistics and supply chain management.

Computers

Logistics professionals depend on computer system skills to get the job done. Learn to work with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Many companies also use computer management systems to keep track of inventory and transportation, so seek out opportunities to work with those systems as soon as possible.

Responsibility

In your current job, get involved in project-based work and be an active, helpful team member. Take on more responsibility whenever possible. Successful careers in logistics require a wide range of skills, so be enthusiastic about taking on new things.

Research

Spend time researching companies you’re interested in. Avoid applying to companies that have been cutting jobs or posting declining profits. If the company looks good, check whether they post employment opportunities on their website.   Use industry-specific as well as general job search websites.

Resume

A good resume is crucial and the basics are simple:

Keep your resume to two pages or less.  Include all your contact information, such as a professional email address (get rid of “hotguy69@yahoo.com” and opt for your name instead) and a phone number.

List specific achievements as well as industry experience. Key accomplishments should be highlighted at the top of each position listed. Also include logistics industry keywords.

Interview

Preparation is key.  Research the company so you can ask questions that indicate you are interested. Dress appropriately and display confidence in yourself and your skill set. Remember you need to be the right fit for the company and the company needs to be a fit for you.

Work

A high level logistics manager who can show creativity in their job, can earn a great salary with just five to 10 years of experience (usually with a Bachelor’s degree in an area of specialty).

Good Luck!!
