Mistakes That Put Candidates Off

Attracting top talent is always the priority for any SME. However, there are some common mistakes that employers make that can put candidates off. During such a tight candidate market, it’s even more important to be mindful of these errors to avoid losing talent to the competition. Here are some tips from The Recruitment Alternative – Australia’s affordable recruitment agency:

A Lengthy Recruitment Process

One of the most off-putting things to candidates are the length of recruitment processes that drag out over several weeks. Especially with more than 2 interviews (excluding recruitment agency pre-screen). If you have a lengthy and tedious recruitment process, it might be time to make some changes. Chances are, you will miss out on candidates to someone else who moves more quickly and efficiently.

Harsh Interview Style

If a candidate feels they are more being interrogated than interviewed, you will miss out on the opportunity to find out what they are really like, as they will cage up. In addition to this, you will put them off your business and potentially create a bad reputation. Whilst you have questions you need to go through and potentially a tight schedule to stick to, it is important you set a positive tone in your interviews. Candidates will feel more comfortable being themselves. As such, you will get a better read on them and if they would be suitable for the role or not.

Lack of Communication

If you fail to maintain communication with the candidates during the hiring process, they won’t stick around for long. It is important to maintain regular communication. So candidates are not kept in the dark. This goes for when you are working with a Recruitment Agency as well. Be sure to get back to them so they can keep the candidate warm for you to avoid losing them to the competition.

Top 3 Tips To Improve Interview Performance

No one is born with great interview skills. Highly effective interviewees develop their skills through practice and preparation. One of the keys to success is to know what things to prepare before the interview. Failure to know what to focus on before the interview often leads to people preparing the wrong things. This can actually harm your performance. Here are some tips from The Recruitment Alternative – New Zealand’s affordable recruitment agency:

Interview Tips #1 –  Preparing Your Answers

The key to preparation is knowing that all employers will want to know about you. Such as:

  • Do you have the skills, knowledge and experience to do the job?
  • Are you the sort of person they can work with? In other words, what sort of person are you like at work?
  • What are your motivation levels like? What are your motivators and de-motivators?

Preparing answers to these questions means that you will be able to answer virtually any question put to you! No more having to wade through hundreds of practice questions. Rehearse your answers aloud before the interview – it’s one thing to know what to say quite another to say it fluently. Remember: how you say things at an interview is just as important as what you say.

Interview Tips #2 – Research Preparation

Do not just focus on the specific skills that relate to the job you’re going for. You must also prepare answers to the generic competencies. These include planning and organising skills, communication skills, customer service skills, teamwork, coping with change and conflict resolution skills.

By researching the organisation, you are interviewing with, you can relate your prior experience to their business. Demonstrating at an interview that you’ve done a little research never fails to impress the interviewer. Prepare specific examples of what you’ve achieved and how you’ve achieved it. Do the same when you’re preparing answers about your personal attributes and motivators and de-motivators.

Interview Tip #3 – Ask Questions

Prepare some questions to ask in the interview but avoid asking too many questions at the end of the interview. Interviewers generally appreciate inciteful relevant questions.

It’s very handy to have a short summary statement highlighting your strengths up your sleeve. You can use this at the end of an interview as a final flourish – good endings at interviews are extremely important.

Job Search Trends For The New Year 2022

As of late the job market has felt less than normal. As we progress into 2022, the career landscape is predicted to be tricky to navigate for both job seekers and employers. Here are some job search trends to be aware of for the New Year in 2022.

Some Industries Will Thrive, While Others Will Struggle

As we saw over the bulk of the pandemic some industries struggled and others thrived or continued as normal, this trend is will continue into 2022. For example, hospitality, tourism and the fitness are industries that are still recovering. Unfortunately, labour shortages are set to linger.

There are plenty of jobs out there at the moment, so when starting your own job search taking time to review all your options is going to make the world of difference. Consider if the industry you are seeking to get into is struggling or not rehiring at the same level as it used to. You may even contemplate a career change and draw upon transferrable skills.

Lots of Perks Available – But is This a Good Thing?

As employers report a shortage of workers, you may have seen they are throwing everything but the kitchen sink at new hires to attract talent. On a recent news story from Melbourne, Victoria one restaurant owner went as far as offering one year’s paid rent as a perk for a new Restaurant Manager.

Perks are great and all but let’s not forget about the other things that tend to matter to us in the long run. Such as:

  • company culture
  • work-life balance
  • career progression
  • professional development opportunities
  • employee recognition
  • flexibility – working from home, part time school hours, etc.

Freelancing & Less Experienced Workers

Those who choose to freelance are finding more opportunities due to the “great resignation” forcing more companies to pay high premiums for more experienced employees. This has also opened a door for those who are either less experience or lack experience entirely. Employers are now considering candidates who they may have never in the past. Choosing training above the salary inflation we are seeing. This is a great opportunity for job seekers to try a new field or apply for a more senior role to take on more responsibility.

Faster Recruitment Process

It is likely that we will see a much faster recruitment process in an effort to secure talent in a tight market. Hiring speed now gives companies an edge over their competition. This means it’s important for job seekers to know what they want, to save time and avoid missing out on a perfect opportunity. For more job search trends click here.

Christmas Recruitment Tips

Christmas is quickly approaching. We are all starting to wind down and look forward to some rest and relaxation after all the Covid drama. However, before you pack up for the year there are some recruitment tips you should consider. Christmas recruitment is beneficial for many businesses, especially to have your team trained and ready to go in 2022. Here are some Christmas recruitment tips from The Recruitment Alternative.

Start Early

Santa may have a seasonal business, but many small to medium sized business owners in Australia and New Zealand do not. Planning for next year starts now. Know what new hires you need to make before the New Year so that you can decide if they should start now or next year. If recruiting this year is in your plans, it’s better to start early then waiting to late December.

Look Beyond Experience

It is a competitive candidate market out there. There is a lot of demand but not enough supply so don’t limit your search to candidates with similar work histories. Use scenario-based questions to determine whether they can do what’s needed. Candidates could have transferrable skills sets that with a little training could make them the perfect fit for your business. Just because they haven’t done this exact role before, doesn’t mean they won’t be good at it. You can always train those would an excellent work ethic and attitude.

Review Your Culture

Santa’s elves want to work for him because he is jolly and approachable and there is a positive work environment. The elves never fail to deliver the presents on time for Santa to give to all the children. If your company culture has taken a hit, it may be time to consider the following:

  • Building stronger employee relationships
  • Connect your team with a purpose
  • Have frequent employee recognition
  • Be more transparent and open with your team
  • Allow more autonomy or flexible working arrangements for balance
  • Check in with your team one on one

When you’re interviewing candidates for new roles, they will pick up on the company culture and vibe.

Interview Remotely

With lockdowns in place across New Zealand, you may find yourself in the position of being interviewed remotely. That may be over the phone or Zoom (or other video chat platforms). Although other states may not be in lockdown, you may still find yourself in the position of being virtually interviewed. But, how can you successfully interview remotely? From The Recruitment Alternative, here are the top 5 things to consider:

Prevent Technical Difficulties

There is nothing worse than coming across internet connection issues. Prior to your interview, be sure to check your connection to avoid any technical difficulties or glitches. Ensure you have downloaded the required video chat software prior to your interview time and run a test. Have all other tabs closed in advance so you are not distracted during the interview and so it doesn’t affect the video chat by slowing it down.

Your Appearance

Just because it is over video chat in your home, doesn’t mean you should not dress for the job. Still dress according to the industry you are interviewing for, with your goal being to look professional. You should also consider your background. Can you see your messy kitchen counter in the background or your unmade bed? Aim to have a plain and natural background with plenty of lighting on your face as possible.

Interview Best Practise

As you would for any other interview, prepare, prepare, prepare. You should:

  • Still conduct appropriate research of the company you are interviewing with
  • Have questions prepared
  • Be body language conscious
  • Prepare your outfit in advance
  • Be ready to go 10 minutes in advance
  • If headphones are needed, use an appropriate set that has been tested so that the interviewer can hear you and you can hear them
  • Thank the interviewer at the conclusion of the interview

Body Language

When interviewing remotely your body language has never been more important. Don’t forget to smile, when listening nodded to show you can hear and understand, sit up straight and in the frame so that the interviewer can see you correctly and avoid any visual distractions as they will notice your eyes darting around and not maintaining eye contact.

Interview Remotely: Take Notes

During the interview, take notes on a note pad not on the computer you are using to interview on. It would be handy to keep a notepad next to the computer should you need it. You can use it to note down the answers to your prepared questions if needed. It would also be handy to keep your resume printed off and near you as well for reference.

So, how can you successfully interview remotely? We hope you now feel more confident to tackle your next virtual interview.

Affordable Recruitment For Small Businesses

Our value proposition is that you no longer have to pay high prices to source great candidates. Here at The Recruitment Alternative, we offer affordable recruitment services for small businesses. We understand that all businesses essentially want two things from a recruitment agency. The first is great candidates and the second is low cost recruitment fees. We provide both!

How are we so affordable?

This is a question that we are asked often. “How can we provide such an effective recruitment service at such low recruitment prices?”

The answer is simple. We are able to offer a highly effective recruitment service by adopting a range of innovative reforms.  These reforms allow us to provide our clients with high levels of service at a low cost. You no longer have to pay high prices to access a great recruitment service.

Check out what we do to keep our prices down:

  1. Lots of work means we can keep our margins low.Due to our budget pricing and our very high service levels we get lots of work. Because we get lots of work, we’re able to keep our prices down.
  2. We work very hard to keep our administration, infrastructure and marketing costs down.We save thousands of dollars by aggressively eliminating unnecessary expenditures. There are no fancy offices with city views and no long client lunches for us. Much of our work comes from word of mouth!
  3. The bulk of our consultants’ pay comes from successfully placing a candidate with our clients. If we don’t place a candidate our income is severely curtailed.
  4. We’re not greedy.Conventional agencies charge, on average, 12% (and even that’s on the low side). 12% of, say, a $70K role is: $8400. That’s $8,400 for a single placement. We think that’s excessive. If you agree why not contact us for a chat?
  5. Excellent Recruitment Service at a budget price!

Simple Flat Fee Structure For Small Businesses

How To Prepare Your 2021 Job Search

As we all collectively wave goodbye to long year that was 2020, many still feel uncertain about what the job market has install for us. Here are some tips from The Recruitment Alternative on how to prepare your 2021 job search efforts.

Highlight Your Achievements On Your Resume

Under each role you have listed on your resume, be sure to outline any notable achievements which clearly summaries your results and accomplishments. This will help your resume to stand out from the crowd and preparing multiple copies (depending on the job you apply for), will help customise your application.

Clean Up Your Social Media Profiles

Employers and recruiters will often take a look at candidates social media presence. If there is something on your social media that you wouldn’t want a future employer to see it would be a good time to remove it. In addition to this, having a professional profile picture will help tidy things up. Especially update your LinkedIn profile, making sure your career history is current, any inconsistencies between your LinkedIn and resume are rectified and have a clear and well-written summary displayed.

Have Referees Ready To Go

There is nothing worse than coming towards the conclusion of an application process and having things drag out even further or even fall through because you don’t have referee’s available. Take time to determine who your references will be. Contact them in advance to see if they are willing to be your referee. Have more than two up your sleeve in case some fall-through.

Job Alerts

Set up job alerts for the industry and job roles you are seeking to apply for on Seek, Indeed, LinkedIn, recruitment agency job boards, etc. This means you will be able to apply quickly for the roles you are most passionate about. Be sure to have these alerts set up on your phone and desktop so you don’t miss a beat.

Recruitment Trick or Treat?

Halloween is approaching, don’t let your new hire be a recruitment trick or treat lucky dip. As all employers quickly learn, there’s a world of difference between a new employee who’s correctly matched to their job and their organization and recruiting one who is not.

How do you find and match the right people to the right jobs?

By including, in your organisation’s people strategy, a well-structured recruiting program. So, the key to successfully running such a program is to follow a recruiting process. Resist the temptation to omit steps, because shortcutting the process can short-change your results.

Here’s what you’ll need to do!

  • Have accurate, current job descriptions – Make sure you have an effective job description for each position in your company. Your job descriptions should reflect careful thought as to the roles the individual will fill. Also the skill sets they’ll need, the personality attributes that are important to completing their tasks, and any relevant experience that would differentiate one applicant from another. This may sound basic, but you’d be surprised at how many small companies fail to develop or maintain updated job descriptions.
  • Contact a Recruitment Agency that has a proven success record with small to medium sized business – Recruitment agencies have more time than you do to contact potential candidates and screen their qualifications. They can also conduct pre-screening interviews and narrow down the pool to the best candidates available.
  • Draft the ad, describing the position and the key qualifications required – Although some applicants will ignore these requirements and respond regardless, including this information will help you limit the number of unqualified applicants.
  • Company Culture – So, before you start the hiring process, determine your strategy. Make sure the successful candidate is a good fit with your company’s culture. Do you understand your company’s culture? If need be, ask an outsider to assess the culture of your organisation. Your goal is to have a plan that will help you determine whether you have the right person who will fit into your company’s culture.

In Conclusion

Your people strategy must include a recruiting and selection strategy that attracts and retains quality employees. So, following a structured process will help you best match the right people to the right jobs. Recruitment trick or treat – No risk with The Recruitment Alternative.

The Recruitment Alternative operates New Zealand wide. Across Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, etc. We can offer you affordable recruitment solutions at a low-cost price point that makes sense. If you would like to find out more about our services contact us today on 0800 587 546.

Christchurch’s Affordable Employment Agency

Christchurch’s affordable employment agency, The Recruitment Alternative, recruits everything from Senior BDM to Accounts and Marketing positions, and more. Currently, in Christchurch, the key to finding the right employee for your business can be following a few important steps.

Creating a correct Job Brief

Recruitment for the role needs to be thought out and specific. So think about what you need the person to do. Make sure your job brief gives a true and correct example of what the role will entail.  Always share this whole job brief with your recruiter so we get the job done right the first time. “Time is money” and a placement carried out correctly the first time will save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

Pre-Screening Applicants

Also be wary of agencies that just pass on CV’s without conducting interviews. Your Recruitment Specialists should know your company, the vacancy, and the candidate. A Professional Employment Agency will only pass on the best candidates for you to interview.

Interview & Selection

So always act quickly if you get the right candidate in front of you. The recruitment market is competitive. Great candidates don’t stay looking for long. If you get the best candidate through in the first interviews don’t wait. They may not be available a few weeks later when you’re ready to select the successful applicant.

Engage an Employment Agency you can trust

Recruitment is a skill. Having a great Recruitment specialist that can identify a good match is key to retention. Therefore it’s good to understand that effective recruitment has a domino effect in the workplace. Employees see that you make wise decisions. As a result, this positive attitude will affect the quality of your products or services, and ultimately, your customers’ perceptions of your company.

The Recruitment Alternative is New Zealand’s Low-cost employment agency provider.
